BAYSIDER SWIMS HIS WAY TO US COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

YEARS of hard training have paid off for Bayside swimming talent Jared Goldthorpe, who has been awarded a scholarship to West Virginia University in the United States.

The nineteen-year-old from Malabar has gone from strength to strength during past ten years he has been training at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre with coach Jon Shaw. The coach-athlete partnership has been rewarded with countless State Championship titles, as well as national age and open medals.

Jared, who is currently ranked 5th in Australia in the men’s 200m backstroke, represented his country at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in India and at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in January in Guam, where he was spied by the US college recruiters.

He is now looking forward to the challenge of moving overseas to combine his tertiary studies with the experience of competing in the US college system.

“I’m excited to be heading over to the States, and meeting my new teammates at West Virginia,’’ Jared said.

“It’ll be interesting to compare the experience of training with the American coaches and competing against a whole new set of swimmers.’’

But  Jared won’t be forgotten back home. He will be returning to compete for Bayside at the Australian Open Championships next March, where he will be vying for a spot on the Australian Pan Pacific Games team.

In the meantime, his team in West Virginia is looking forward to Jared’s arrival next month.

“I am very excited about working with Jared and helping him reach all his goals,’’ West Virginia University Head Swim coach Vic Riggs said.

Jared will compete, alongside Bayside teammates Rick Pendleton, Milly McGuinness, Jessica Best, Sarah Hoyles and Ashley Stone at the Telstra Australian Short Course Championships in Hobart next week, before he flies to the United States to commence studies in their Fall semester.

IT’S been another brilliant week for Baysiders down in Hobart at the Australian Open Short Course Championships

Six of our swimmers competed with distinction. Among the highlights:

Rick Pendleton won three bronze medals, one each in the Men’s Multi-Disability 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and the 200IM. Rick also broke the World Record in the 200IM for his class. Rick’s outstanding performances during the week have earned him selection to the Australian team competing at the International Paralympic Championships in Rio de Janeiro in November.

Jared Goldthorpe won bronze in the Men’s Open 200m backstroke. Jared was also a finalist in the 400m freestyle and semi-finalist in the 100m backstroke. Jared also swam in the consolation final of the 200m freestyle. In each event, Jared swam strong personal best times that gained him top ten spots in the Australian rankings - a fitting way to finish up the season before heading off to the US.

The Championships were also a great opportunity for some of Bayside’s emerging female athletes. Making their debut at Open nationals:

Jessica Best competing in the 50m and 100m backstroke;

Ashley Stone competing in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke;

Representing Bayside at Open nationals for the third year in a row:

Milly McGuinness who competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly.

And newcomer to Bayside:

Sarah Hoyles who competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 200IM.

All our swimmers competed strongly, enjoyed the team experience, learned a little, and had a lot of fun.

Their achievements are a credit to the ongoing commitment of the coaching staff at DRAC, and the continuing support of the Bayside team.
